South Airdrie Smiles Dental Clinic Tips on Orthodontic Options for Your Child

You may be waiting on your child to let go of those baby teeth so that they can come in for an orthodontic exam.

You may have a young adult who is ready for an orthodontic exam now and you want to be informed before making the appointment.

You may be exploring options for yourself.

Either way, let’s go ahead and begin discussing the various types of braces.

The most common type of braces are metal brackets. If you and I decide that metal brackets are the best option for your child, then these brackets run along a wire and affix to your child’s teeth. Together, the brackets and wire press against the teeth to move them slightly so that they will become straight and properly aligned. They are usually used to help close gaps or correct crooked teeth.

With kids, because their bones are not rigid like adults, we are able to move their teeth around with dental appliances before we even get to braces. Sometimes this negates the need for braces altogether! You see, adults have bones that are rigid and fixed while kids’ bones are pliable and can be gently moved and expanded. Appliances allow us to set the stage by widening their jaws and creating more space for incoming teeth. Whether braces are needed after or not is something that we can discuss at follow up appointments. The earlier we start the better result we get and less overall time it will take to complete treatment!

Another option, is Invisalign. Invisalign is an orthodontic process that allows you to get straight teeth whithout having to but metal braces on. It involves a series of clear plastic trays that gently move your teeth from tilted, protruding or crowded to straight. Patients with Invisalign are grateful for the fact that they never have to look like they’re wearing braces, especially at memorable events like weddings and graduations. It’s awesome!
